A Season of Thankfulness

It's the month of November. This is a month that we celebrate thanksgiving. We gather with our families, share our blessings with each other, eat really good food, watch parades, play games, go shopping. Then in the next month, we celebrate all over again with Christmas. You could say the next couple of months are going to be filled with joy, love, and celebration. Behind all of the material things going on, what does it truly mean to be thankful? Just because we have a few months of celebrating does not mean the hardships and trials of life are going to stop in this time. I am personally going through some trials right now with the mental health of my mom. It can definitely be hard to be in a season of thankfulness when everything seems to be falling apart. I recently was listening to a song called Gratitude. In this song someone spoke a testimony about anxiety and gratitude, and it flipped my whole idea of thankfulness upside down. A scientific study has proven that anxiety and gratitude cannot physically exist in the brain at the same time. If this is true, then when I let my worry and anxious thoughts control me, am I truly being grateful? When we don't know what to do, we should turn to worship. Our worship should be so much louder than our worry because when we worship, we are not just singing praise to God, we are humbling ourselves, asking God to carry the weight of our worry, anxiety, and hurt. When we worship, we can read the truth in God's word, pray and ask God to take away whatever is holding us down. When we worship, we can sit in the presence of God and while we may not be saying anything he hears our hearts crying out. Gratitude and thankfulness are not just to be expressed around a time of thanksgiving. We are to carry them in our hearts every day, so when the trials of life come our way, we can turn to worship, and we can say my gratitude lives in me. If you are struggling with thankfulness, remember it is not just a season. I challenge you to write out what you are grateful for. I leave you with this "Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus." - 1 Thessalonians 5:18

As you write about your blessings listen to this song. It speaks so much truth into how good God is and that He truly is worthy of it all. Blessings!
